untitled, 1970
oil on canvas, 76x54cmClassically arranged, Kurpershoek lets vibrant light penetrate the scene. The objects’ original colours have been extracted and, instead, bathe in yellow hues contrasted by icy-blue from the window. Furthermore, fresh rose, orange and violet tones are delicately reflected throughout the composition, complimenting the rusty brown of the autumnal leaves of the bouquet. The vase is rendered so skillfully that its texture reflects the luster of mother of pearl, a tonality which is echoed by more orange hue on the cat’s coat. The brightness of the green pasture outside is transferred onto the tops of the fruits, deeply sunken away in the basket on the window sill.
Although the artist described himself as a Realist, it can be observed that parts of the composition have been simplified significantly, for example, the floral design has lost its dimensionality and therefore can be seen as a poetic rendition of form and colour rather than mirroring the visible world.
