The artist was influenced by folklore themes which led him to paint masked figures and performers such as those found in the circus. Molenkamp articulated himself with an unpredictable but thoughtful expressionist technique that created vivid dream-like environments. Some of his works have a connection to tribal art, in particular totem poles. But otherworldly creatures also emerge.
There are some echoes of the CoBrA movement in Molenkamp’s work; however, he certainly does not conform to it. Molenkamp could be seen as an outsider of the group, like Eugene Brands, whose work is also in the Bueler-Berard collection.
Molenkamp received many awards for his work, including the Talensprijs, the Willink van Collenprijs and the Verlatprijs.
