mixed media, oil, pastels (oil), pencil on canvas, 160x121cmMelancholic in character, this nightscape or perhaps a scene found on a far away planet draws us in. A harmony of nuances is produced by a technique that combines both painting and drawing, resulting in a pastiche of marks and layers. The predominant dark, tenebristic mood creates an enigmatic, almost sinister setting, with a red cloud looming in the background. Yet, the dense backdrop is counterbalanced by a large but rather light formation prominently positioned in the foreground. It’s treated with an enormous scala of grey tones, broken-up by agitated penciling and pastel stains. The exposure of the artist’s workings reveals incredible nuances.
